In the article, "Should Everyone Get a Trophy?" by Lauren Tarshis, she talked about how kids get a trophy just for showing up to team practices. Our school system decided more than a decade ago to pass kids on to the next grade regardless of how successful they were on their report card.
Do you think kids should fail?

Should Kids Be Held Back

Kids should be held back. If a kid gets less than the required mark for passing, they shall not pass. Grades are a key to the gate of moving on.

Grades are rewards. A good grade gives good rewards but bad grades have bad consequences. If the child wants the reward of being able to apply to a good college/university they will to improve everything.

If a student has a dream to be a scientist, they will have to be good, or even better, great at everything that they think that a scientist needs to be good at.

A kid may grow up and want to do many things but they have to have the prerequisites that allow them to move on. Certain jobs require skills that people can acquire through school work.

Kids need encouragement and we are giving them any right now. Work doesn't give you a raise just for showing up, it requires you to do your job and do it well, and maybe you will get that promotion you've wanted. You will be pushed along for the first 10 years but then high school will be harsh and hold you back if you fail at any subject you will be held back.
